Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa in 1970 and lives and works in New York. She has exhibited extensively, including a travelling mid-career survey at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2019), which travelled to the High Museum of Art, Atlanta (2020); the Whitney Museum of American Art (2021); and the Walker Art Center (2021). In 2005, Mehretu was the recipient of the MacArthur Fellows Award and the American Art Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2015, she was awarded the US Department of State Medal of Arts Award. Mehretu is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Design. In 2025, she was appointed Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. Recent solo exhibitions include Julie Mehretu: Kairos / Hauntological Variations (2026) at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Julie Mehretu (2025) at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen; and Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory (2024) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
